I was once a voracious reader- before doing my doctorate and getting busy with life, work, parenting, and scrolling on Instagram and Facebook for more hours than I care to admit! I recently made the decision to get back to reading as an act of mindfullness, relaxation, and self-care. I have enjoyed getting back into the rhythm of reading, finding the space to sit quietly and get engrossed in a story.
Why devote time to reading? Studies show that reading can positively change your brain in the somatosensory cortex, give you a heightened ability to understand the feelings and beliefs of others, build your vocabulary, delay cognitive decline, and reduce stress. I enjoy mixing up my reading between fiction of all kinds and non-fiction focused on topics that will contribute to my professional responsibilities and community volunteer and board roles. So without further delay, here is my summer 2023 reading list. I'll check back in with some thoughts on these books later in the summer.
